  17.      "...I might be willing to respond on something like the
  18. Northridge quake, where there is no damage in my area. However I
  19. am not about to leave my home unprotected, without gas,
  20. electricity, water or telephone if there is looting and civil
  21. unrest and the police are stretched so thin that they cannot
  22. adequately cope."

  24.      Comments: In an emergency, our first concern is rightly
  25. that of our family or other personal priority. There are and can
  26. be instances where it is inappropriate to respond to any aspect
  27. of a call-out. There are those, however, who have prepared their
  28. families in what to do and how to cope so that they can respond
  29. to a duty station and stay as long as needed (with adequate rest
  30. periods inter-spersed as appropriate.) Such people will
  31. literally go around almost any barrier to respond to the local
  32. need if that is  expected of them and they have been trained for
  33. that response level. Essentially it depends on our personal
  34. situation, perspective and preparedness; physical as well as
  35. mental. It's our choice!
  36.       It may not be possible to make preparations for every
  37. eventuality, but it starts with our personal view point. There
  38. is no "right" or "wrong" perspective or reaction. Each must
  39. chose. Experience does show that there are those whose
  40. dedication is at such a level that the concerns expressed are
  41. transcended by their own choice. It depends on ones personal
  42. priorities. There are instances of response in face of total
  43. personal loss, as well as all conditions in between. Again: it's
  44. your choice. Whatever you chose is right for you.
